"Charles Eames"
Portfolio #2
1950
14 page illustrated article.
Cover of the magazine is a Charles Eames collage of a kite. Also included and illustrated here, "Charles Eames design for a kite, pasted up from brilliant swatches of tissue paper, reflects the same creative organization of form and color that goes into his architecture and furniture."
Excerpt: "Ray and Charles are in every sense, that much abused word, a team, and their best known product, the Eames chair, itself is a result of their somewhat torturous experiments together in molding plywood, when they brought wood up to their apartment after dark to avoid a more conventional landlord, used a bicycle pump as a compressor, and worked out the process of molding plywood into desired shapes. Later, since factory machinery was inadequate to carry out the molding process, they had to work on revising and improving the machinery itself for better and more satisfying results."
