Eames Spotting Salutes SKANK WORLD

August 15, 2012 by: Daniel Ostroff

SKANK WORLD, the famous mid-century modernism store, has moved to a new location, after 31 years on Beverly Boulevard.

Linda Gershon, proprietor of Skank World, is the pioneer in this field of collecting. Her knowledge, her experience, her authentic stock, has won her legions of followers in Los Angeles, and from as far away as Germany and Japan.

The new address is 7023 1/2 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90038. She’s open Tuesday through Saturday, two pm to six pm. You can call 323-965-1757 for an appointment. The website is http://www.skankworld.net/

With the kind permission of Linda Gershon, we reproduce here a photograph of a pair of rare Eames chairs, with their original and unique “flower” upholstery.

Linda acquired these twenty five years ago from an Eames Office staffer who specialized in upholstery and Linda can attest to the authenticity of these fine vintage examples.

She had four, but as of this post, there are only two left. As long time Skank World associate PETER will tell you, “Ray Eames shopped here.” As I prepared today’s Eames Spotting I chatted with Peter who told me that not only did Ray Eames shop at Skank World, she once brought Vitra Chairman Rolf Fehlbaum to the store, and the Curator of the Vitra Design Museum, Alexander Von Vegesack.
