PKC-1 1955
Pivot K (wire seat) Cast aluminum base, (-1) upholstered
In 1955 the Eames Office introduced this, their first all cast aluminum base. Most of us recognize this base, because one year later, in 1956, it was put into service as the base for the 671 Ottoman. The 1955 Herman Miller catalog describes this model: "Base with long-life pivot mechanism. Upholstered wire shell. Base finish of black baked enamel, polished aluminum."
1955 upholstery options: black leather; naugahyde-- raw umber, charcoal, red, or blue; tweed; fabric--raw umber light, black, dark grey, crimson, yellow, ULTRAMARINE (this example), raw umber dark, ochre, or navy. In terms of the evolution of Eames designs, it is interesting to view this base as an evolutionary step which follows the base of this DAT-1.
