IBM

“MATHEMATICA...A World of Numbers and Beyond”,

designed by the Office of Charles and Ray Eames. Sponsored by the IBM Corporation.

The following is from the Eames Office designed descriptive brochure that was given out at the exhibition:

"Mathematics is a tool.

Mathematics is a science.

Mathematics is a work of art.

Mathematics is a language, a language encountered and used daily, a language which touches and affects almost every area of human work and play. Mathematics began with the invention of numbers to count by. Its tools were the human body and, later, simply constructed mechanical devices which extended the human capacity to add, subtract, multiply, divide and measure. Mathematics has become, over the centuries, the basis of many of the sciences. It touches philosophy, medicine, economics, music, art and architecture, and the social sciences. Its language has become more subtle and difficult, its tools more elaborate and complex, its practitioners more diverse and specialized.

This exhibition shows some of the range of mathematics, some of the richness of its ideas and the variety of its aspects. The theory, the imagery and the history of mathematics are portrayed in an array of demonstrations, devices and statements. It is intended to show the joy and excitement that mathematics find in pursuing their science."

This is a mini-documentary about the Mathematica exhibit at the New York Hall of Science. The exhibit, which celebrates mathematicians and helps children appreciate math, was designed for IBM for the 1964 World’s Fair by the design team of Charles and Ray Eames. This video was made on the occasion of the release of an iPad app about the exhibit, http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/minds-of-modern-mathematics/id432359402?ls=1&a…
