From Herman Miller early 1950s "Chairs" poster: "The formed wire shell of these chairs is welded into a single, lightweight unit. The double perimeter wire forms a continuous open truss for added strength. The versions shown here (SIMILAR TO THIS EXAMPLE) have two-piece upholstered pads which are easily removable for cleaning."
This example has the earliest type of glides found on these chairs, consisting of a bolt which secures a "dome of silence" rubber/metal disc. This type of glide was very fragile and few examples survive intact. The glides on this chair are all original.
This pad may be a later addition or replacement; it has the Redwood Avenue address and it indicates a foam filling. The earliest upholstery pads were stuffed with cattle body hair.
