This chair represents the remarkable effort made by the Eames Office to address every customer's needs, in this case, the need for a TILT-SWIVEL drafting chair.
This example has the earliest paint finish, described in the Herman Miller catalogue as "grey, baked wrinkle enamel," an industrial grey paint, no doubt one as durable as that used on battleships, whose grey paint this resembles.
It reflects one of the Eames commitments, to bring to consumer goods the benefits of durable industrial products.
The "3497" on the upholstery label below is the identifier for the exclusive, Herman Miller Naugahyde, an Alexander Girard material.
