Herman Miller

3679 Table

Height 18, Diameter 30

Weight 140 lbs.

This coffee table with the so-called La Fonda base comes from the collection of Max Lawrence, co-founder of the famed Architectural Pottery company. Lawrence reported that he purchased this table directly from Charles and Ray Eames.

The Herman Miller catalog lists only three possible tops: Botticino Marble MA, Italian black slate SL, or molded plastic tops with charcoal vinyl edge. That Lawrence bought this directly from the Eameses may explain the ONYX top. Elsewhere in this catalog another early Eames table is seen with an Onyx top, and the outdoor Eames aluminum dining table at the Miller House in Columbus, IN also has an Onyx top. The Millers purchased their Eames pieces from Alexander Girard, who would have had direct access and could easily arrange for a special order, and this table too may be a "Special Order."
