Chess Champion Bobby Fischer and His Eames Chair

January 17, 2008 by: Daniel Ostroff

In 1972, chess grand master Bobby Fischer specifically requested the Eames (Time-Life) executive chair while he competed in the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland. He said he could concentrate well in the chair. When opponent Boris Spaasky saw it, he refused to play until he got one, too.   That was the last time Bobby Fischer played in a public, sanctioned, international chess competition.  This is a photo of that historic match, two masters, two masterful Eames chairs.

This photo was reproduced on January 19, 2008,  in The New York Times in their Bobby Fischer obituary.
