Herman Miller manufactured dowel leg chairs for only a short time. There were two options: birch or walnut, like this example. In a 1954 "Chairs" poster by Herman Miller, comprehensive as to models, is no longer advertising dowel leg chairs. Given the Eames Office commitment to quality in ways that would be meaningful for their customers, it seems that the first dowel leg chairs were dropped from the line because of the tendency of the wood to break in rigorous use. The Eames Office offered other options for dining chairs that were much more durable. Still, we can admire this exploration of the use of wood, with its innovative and very attractive "cross rod" bracing of metal wire.
