This is an upholstered wire chair with the two piece pad and the second iteration of "glides."
These glides are black rubber and metal, and they are slipped over round metal balls on the ends of each leg.
At this early date, the pads were backed with jute. This example was assembled in the Herman Miller facility at the back of the Eames Office, 901 W. Washington Boulevard, Venice, CA
Please note the detail shot of the underside, where you can see the original "nut" with which these chairs were equipped. They were provided fully assembled with the base attached by these nuts to customers.
